I might be more happy using some basic drawing program to make boxes on the screen. But be prepared to invest the time to learn it. I’d say if you need CAD to design some real complex carving or three dimensional part – you probably should use some sort of a CAD product. SketchUp is a general design tool – CAD – that was marketed at woodworkers. The video went on to make doors in which the rails and stiles were no more than lines – again – pulled out into a third dimension of a block as if 2 rails and 2 stiles exist as one molded part. No consideration that it’s pretty hard to buy a 12-foot sheet of plywood. Process? The ‘parts’ go into the SketchUp design as flat rectangles waiting to be pulled into the third dimension. Well I’ve been busy and never really looked back until the folks at Rockler asked for a comparison between the two cabinet drawing software tools. And now that I’m over that huge initial hump, future updates should come much more quickly.I looked at SketchUp for cabinet design as a tool before I started SketchList. I also ended up making a custom model in Clip Studio that looks as close to Lina’s body as I could get within the program’s limitations and posing it to help with visualizing how she looks in 3D at different angles and in different poses.Īnyway, this is what I ended up with for what I deemed a satisfactory initial sketch, and I’m pretty happy with it (for now at least 😅).

It took a LOT of trial and error, as well as studying a LOT of different reference materials because fat is surprisingly very hard to figure out how to get right when just about all you’ve ever seen detailed art of is skinny people. So I started with how she looks in underwear at all different angles and challenged myself to really do my best to figure out how to get everything looking as solid as possible without taking any shortcuts. I actually have very little prior experience or knowledge about drawing women with a “fuller figure”, which contributed to my hitting a wall in the previous attempt, and I realized Lina’s redesign would be a great opportunity to learn. And rather than continuing where I left off and being shackled to a design I wasn’t confident in, I figured it’s best to start from scratch and only use elements the previous design to inform the new one. I decide I’m finally ready to come back to the project. Smash cut to a month or so ago (can’t really remember for sure). So I shelved the project for a few months while I took care of other stuff and also gathered a ton of reference materials for things I didn’t feel like I knew how to draw well yet. I started work on Lina’s redesign late last year, but other stuff came up and I also didn’t feel like I had a solid idea of how I wanted to progress with the design at the time, nor did I feel like I really had the skills to pull it off.
